[mkgmap-dev] Section of Country Boundary Missing

From dfjkman at gmail.com dfjkman at gmail.com on Tue Apr 6 16:11:11 BST 2021

Hi all,

Problem solved that section of the boundary is not included in
'zambia-latest.osm.pbf'. Obviously the bounding poly they use to create the
file runs too close to the border and cuts this section off. I know there
have been some border disputes in this region, some fairly recently. The
problem is the demarcation of the border here in colonial times was not
completed as the commission started it's work in the west where the border
follows the watershed but the work was interrupted by the 2 world wars and
the remaining borderline going east was based on old explorer journals and
maps so certain landmarks used in these maps are disputed.

Cheers,
Dave

Subject: Section of Country Boundary Missing

Hi,

I have come across a problem where a section of the Zambia DRC boundary is
not shown on the map but only when creating a map for Zambia not for the DRC
see attached images.

It occurs even if using the most basic of options in both splitter and
mkgmap and using 'congo-democratic-republic-latest.osm.pbf' and
'zambia-latest.osm.pbf' from Geofabrik, the commands for both maps are as
follows:-

Splitter version 598
java -Xmx2000m -jar splitter.jar congo-democratic-republic-latest.osm.pbf >
splitter.log

Mkgmap version 4618
Java -Xmx2000m -jar mkgmap.jar --gmapi --remove-ovm-work-files=true -c
template.args > debug.log

I have had a look at the missing section on OSM using JOSM and can not see
any reason there should be a problem, it is split here as it is also a part
of the Kaputa district boundary in Zambia.

I went back to a version of map created from data in November last year with
mkgmap version 4587 and that had 2 breaks in the boundary, the section that
now appears complete in the current maps has since been joined with the
section to the west of it and that, it would appear, is the reason it is now
complete.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Dave
