Make addAreasToList() less eager to make small areas.

Two main changes:

1 - make the test to decide whether an area needs splitting or not more
discerning. Specifically, the test to see if the area contains too much
stuff now distinguishes between the points, lines and shapes regions.

2 - if the area needs to be split, split into 2 rather than 4.
