If you use the tool Splitter.jar then this sould be done automatically. 
It splits the given osm data to different sized tiles in which each tile 
does not exceed a given number of nodes.
You can set the number of nodes by a calling parameter. If you make it 
to big, then might be, you will get an error at generating the img file 
because there are some internal limits in the file format.
