[mkgmap-dev] Could mkgmap be extended to create an empty dem dist layer?

From Felix Hartmann extremecarver at gmail.com on Mon Apr 23 11:48:03 BST 2018

No I did not - It's not possible for as I tried to create a transparent
gmapsupp.img only dem map. The good thing is if the basemap that is
installed on the device has DEM - the transparent gmapsupp.img only map
will not be used, as the basemap DEM (which is much lower details for the
resolution then currently doable with mkgmap) will take precedence. The
x-dem-empty-dist option is clearly working - but not helping right now.
Best approach is a) map with one dem layer for Basecamp, b) gmapsupp.img
dem only map and c) basemap with dem. Using DEM with AUTO mode (and not
show if available) That way the DEM right now will work pretty good.

Maybe mkgmap could also create basemaps with DEM? I don't think there are
any worldwide basemaps with DEM for download by Garmin? I can only find
this one: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=461
If people do not (accidentally) delete the basemap this does not matter - I
do not know how many people do so?
