[mkgmap-dev] Support for "through_route" relations?

mkgmap contains some code to support "through_route" relations.
These relation type is completely undocumented and taginfo showed that 
it is used only 106 times in the whole planet. Only 26 of them were 
modified within the last year.
The usage is spread over western europe.

Shall we still support this type of relation?
Can anybody explain what this relation does?
