I agree, that typical, at least one of the above things are set. I think 
best would be a parameter --max-tile-size=<max. degree-span of a tile>, 
which have to be smaller than 179°. In my maps I found a tile, which is 
a little bit larger than 20° x 20° in southern part of Patagonia. So I 
think the default should be larger.
