I find *.bin a little general. Most of files are bin. I would suggest 
instead *.osm.bin

A abbreviation of the phrase 'protobuf binary format' would give *.pbf. 
Both from 'ProtoBuF' and from 'Protobuf Bin Format'. The more I think 
about it, the more *.osm.pbf sounds good to me.
