I thought that mkgmap converts all labels to upper case by default.  
There is an option for overriding that.

My Edge 705 can display horizontal text in lower case. In rotated text 
such as road names, lower-case letters are replaced with question marks 
'?'.  It would be nice to have an option that would only convert the 
"rotatable labels" to upper case.
