[mkgmap-dev] Garmin "Feature" or bug?

I've never heard of a gmapbmap.img. My assumptions, but they may be 
totally wrong:

 From the name i would think, this is the basemap. I think, in the 
generated gmapsupp.img is some information for places missing, so the 
garmin unit tries to read this information from the basemap. If this 
informations are also missing then the unit will crash.
